Questions about Casinos
The following are some of the most frequently asked questions;
Q. How old do you have to be to play at a casino?
In order to enter a casino and play in Great Britain,
you have to be at least 18 years of age.
Q.Can anyone enter a casino even if they are 18 years of age or older?
If you want to enter a casino, you must either be a member of that casino, or accompany the member as their
guest. You can apply to be a member of a casino, but in order to play you will need to wait 24 hours after
your membership is approved.
Q.How do you become a member?
You can walk into the casino and ask for the new members area. There you will be able to register. Remember
they will ask for for proof of identification so take a passport or drivers licence to prove who you are and
that you are over the age of 18.
Q.Is there a membership fee to join a casino?
Many casinos will offer membership for free, but of course this is at the discretion of the casino itself.
Popular casinos such as Gala and Stanley will not charge any membership fees. Some will charge a membership
fee as part of its procedures for joining. If in doubt, just ask what their policies are for joining.
Q.Is there a minimum amount of money I need to gamble at a casino?
Of course not, it is up to you how much you wish
to gamble, but of course you should only gamble
what you can afford to lose. Depending on the
casino, some games will have a minimum bet associated
with them. This minimum bet can also vary according
to time of day and day of week. Playing weekends
in the evening usually involves playing bigger
hands than at other times. Before you place your
stake, there will be a sign advising how much
the minimum stake is.
Q.What is the dress code for casinos?
Dress to impress or dress casually should be fine. But wearing jeans and a t-shirt is usually not allowed in
a British casino. If in doubt, ask before you arrive. When you first become a member, the casino will issue
you with an information pack. Within that should be details of what the acceptable dress code is.
Q.Will I get free drinks all night?
It all depends on how much you are playing and for how long. Also, it depends on the policy of the casino
you are playing at. But one thing for sure, don't play when you are drinking alcohol as your judgement on
games could be affected.
Q.How do I get my winnings?
At the end of the night when you want to cash in your chips you will go to a part of the casino specifically
set up for paying you. Take your chips and depending on the amount the casino has to pay out, they will either
give you the cash or, for larger amounts give you a cheque. Casinos have different policies on pay outs in
cash, always ask how much they will be in cash and when they will pay by cheque or direct deposit transfer
to your bank account.
Q.Should I tip the dealer?
In Britain this is not allowed as according to the Government guidelines: "Gratuities from players to staff
in respect of gaming are unlawful.". If you decide to play in Las Vegas for example, then it is different.
Tipping is not expected, but always appreciated, especially when you are on a winning streak. Best way to
usually reward the dealer is to play a game on his or her behalf. That way, if you win, they win.
